PharmaCare is named among the most respectable pharmaceutical companies in

the world. It is said to be an honorable and well-run organization that produces high-

quality products that have not only saved millions of lives but also improve the quality of

lives for millions of others. However, looking into the company mode of operation, we

notice some significant discrepancies between its ethics and its commitment to social

PharmaCare’s Human Rights

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality,

place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, color, religion, language, or any other

status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination (OHCHR,

2015). However, it has come to light that some multinational corporation are involved in

social injustice, unfair working conditions as well as a lack of concern for the

environment in which they operate. Taking a look at PharmaCare, who maintains a large

manufacturing facility in Colberia, we can notice the little regard it has for its indigenous

workers as those ones are working and living under hard conditions compare to the

luxury live of its executives.

PharmaCare workers in Colberia are paid $1.00 a day and have to work about 10 miles to

get in and out of the jungle carrying baskets of plants that weight about 50 pounds. No

equipment is provided to facilitate their labor; making it not a surprise that with their

low wage, the indigenous are still living in huts with no electricity or running water. So,

it is aberrant that a reputable company such as PharmaCare, which offers free and

discounted drugs to low-income consumers, has a foundation that sponsors healthcare,

educational programs and scholarships, and which executives are living in mansions with

swimming pool, tennis courts and golf course, has made no
