Lake Winnipeg is measured to be about 24514 square kilometres, located in Manitoba Canada and its southern tip is about 55kilometres north of the city of Winnipeg. It is the largest lake within the borders of the southern Canada, Lake Winnipeg is also the sixth-largest fresh water lake in Canada. Lake Winnipeg consists of two distinct basins, the north basin which makes up approximately 75% o f the lake surface area and reaches 100 kilometres wide, while the south basin is up to 46 kilometres wide. The Lake is home to a staggering assortment of aquatic life, a wellspring of water to the animals that populate its shores, and it’s a major flyway for migrating birds. Over the years, researchers have shown the deteriorating water quality in the lake, some of the causes of the deteriorating water quality are pollution, invasive species, loss of biodiversity, E. coli contamination, climate change, controlled water levels, erosion, and habitat destruction. The blue-green algae are known to release to release microcystin. Also, the E. coli bacteria was recently found in Lake Winnipeg, in July last year two of the Lake Winnipeg’s popular beaches had a high record of E. coli contamination. The record was 1364 E. coli bacteria per 100 millilitres of water. The Lake Winnipeg Foundation is attempting to address the underlying causes of destructive green-blue algae blossoms.
