When determining guilt or innocence you want to assume that no matter the sex or race of the individual who commits the crime a suitable punishment will follow if convicted. Unfortunately, research shows that minorities are more likely to be convicted and/or receive harsher punishments for the same crime committed by their Caucasian counterparts. The teacher or administration may feel that school discipline isn’t working so they refer the student to the off duty officer who patrols the school halls. The main focus of the officer is safety. A negative encounter with this officer can have the student involved in the juvenile justice system with that the notion their behavior will improve if it’s a possible of being locked out up if they don’t straighten up. Then on the other hand there’s the Restorative justice programs that also holds the student accountable, but focuses more on rehabilitation that may come off as lenient in the eyes of law enforcement. Yes, unfortunately it reiterates the lack respect of African American in the court system. Even in the recent tragedies of shooting at colleges and churches whose perpetrator is typically a young white male who the media refers to as a trouble teen who comes from a good family, who wasn’t very social and has mental health issues. Tending to subtlety justify their actions.
