Has violence ever prevailed? Has fighting ever made the world a brighter or happier place? Standing up for what is right and for what you believe is imperative to make the world a better place. While standing up for justice is very important, using violent actions to prove your point will never make the world a better place. Peaceful resistance to unjust laws positively impacts our society because it educates people and changes their hearts toward the law, it is longer lasting, and it ultimately can bring about needed change.
Peaceful resistance to laws educates and makes people aware of unjust and unfair laws. Non-violent protest against laws promotes the cause without damaging anything or anyone. When one person stands up against unjust laws with protest and other nonviolent acts, more people will come alongside him with support. Understanding the cause through peaceful resistance is more effective than being forced to support it. Someone that is educated on the injustice can chose which side he wants to defend. In many cases just your words and determination can influence people to change what is unjust. A great example of this is Martin Luther King, Jr.’s I Have a Dream speech. Violently persuading people to do what you think is right will not bring about permanent change. Physical violence might temporarily solve the problem, but there will be long term problems. When there is a change of heart in the matter, it has a different effect on people. The change will last for generations. An example of this is The Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s.
