Throughout the novel, Atticus is symbolic of the movement to stop racism and the gaining of civil rights for African Americans. In court with a white majority jury and a white man testifying against a black man, Atticus is unable to stop the spread of racism and discrimination because of Maycomb’s prejudiced people, hence the gun with no bullet. Atticus raising the rifle and aiming even though there is no bullet represents Atticus sticking up for Tom and giving him the best defense he could.
