Those who were pro-slavery believed it was the will of God for those who were slaves to be slaves. “But, slavery is good for some people!!! As a good thing, slavery is strikingly peculiar [sic], in this, that it is the only good thing which no man ever seeks the good of, for himself.” (Lincoln, 1858) Slaveholders convinced themselves that slavery was good for the slaves, but all they ever looked at was the good of themselves. They turned to the bible for justification and being that it was seen as neither wrong nor right, it was left to the slaveholder to make the ultimate decision of keeping the slaves or letting them go free without the slaves’ opinion.
