Testing Fish “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Your job in this, dear fish, is to identify the trees most common around; the multiple choice, essay, short answer, extra credit, and graph problems, in descending popularity. These all have their place in the forest that is a test, and as varied as any forest, there are infinite ways to mix them. The hierarchy of test questions is up for debate, but one thing is for certain: some of them are worse than others.
Multiple choice, favored by many, is a kind tree. One with many hand holds, branches and rough bark. With process of elimination, simple deduction and some prior knowledge, it’s possible to get the right answer with perfect accuracy, even with your fishy inability to climb the tree. With only four or five answers to go for you can’t get more than 80 percent wrong if you just guess the same letter over and over, which may very well be better chance of success than any other type of question. A B C D E and maybe F are the saviors of bad test scores. These questions are the deal maker or breakers. If the test has too few of them, begin to despair immediately. The Fates may still have it in their weave to have you pass the test, but it’s not looking good. This should, by all means, affect your views on the test giver.
