As mentioned before, Romeo says he was in love with Rosaline but how could one have been truly been in love with her one minute and in love with Juliet the next. As Romeo lays eyes on Juliet for the first time he states “ Oh, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear, Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear. So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows As yonder lady o'er her fellows shows. The measure done, I’ll watch her place of stand, And, touching hers, make blessèd my rude hand. Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night.” (Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet 1.5.60-62). The instant he sees Juliet, he has forgotten all about his so-called “love” for Rosaline. This make one wonder if he ever was in “love” with Rosaline to begin with. This shows how little and inexperienced he is about love. Friar Laurence even expresses how Romeo’s love for Juliet might be nothing more than just a crush considering how he was just heartbroken over Rosaline not long ago. “Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here! Is Rosaline, whom thou didst love so dear, So soon forsaken? Young men's love then lies Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.” (Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet 2.3 65). In conclusion, both characters were not mature enough considering the fact that the actions they took were too rushed and not thought out since they are just kids and haven’t reached the level of maturity
