These three bases are the respectively, economic, political and social rewards. The first bases of the stratification is wealth. According to Karl Marx, the industrial society can be divided into two major classes and one minor class in the nineteenth century. The two major classes are known as the bourgeoise (capitalists), the petite bourgeoise (small capitalists) and the proletariat (workers). By the Marxists theory, these 3 classes is differentiated on the basis of two criteria, the people who own the means of the production – tools, factories, offices and stores – and with the ability to hire others to work for them. The bourgeoise (capitalists) is knowns as the people who own the means of production and hire others to work for them for the production. For the proletariat (workers), they do not own the means of productions and can’t afford to hire others to work for them. Hence in this case, they are forced to work for the capitalists in order to survive in the society. Then, the petite bourgeoise (small capitalists) are the one who own the means of production but lack in the ability to hire others which means that they need to do most of the work themselves. Examples of small capitalists are shopkeepers, doctors, lawyers, and others self-employed persons. The small capitalists had been considered as a minor transitional class by Marx as he believed that these people eventually forced downed into the working class as their means of production can be taken by the giant corporations, the capitalists.
