Once arriving in New York it could take days just to get to Ellis Island itself. However, once immigrants arrived here health and legal inspections began. If an immigrants passed the inspections and registry they then arrived at The Stairs of Separation. This separated immigrants from the people going West and South, going to New York or the North, or the detainees. By this the immigration journey had only just begun. These new citizens had a whole new life and hardships ahead of them. Since, Elsa was young when she immigrated she doesn’t remember a lot from Ellis itself. She said that she remembered being interviews and being inspected when she arrived. A major difference between the two time periods is that Elsa was at Ellis for about a night; while back in the 1800’s people could be there for weeks upon end trying to make it to The Kissing Post. Elsa arrived late at night; however she remembers not being at the island very long before they were already on a train heading to Chicago. The journey from to Ellis was not easy between the two time eras; the waters rough as the journey itself. As time progressed immigrants had an easier time moving from place to place. The adjustments were still difficult over all. Language barriers still existed; because English (which is now considered a universal language) was still not
