Kant starts the article by answering clearly the question what is enlightenment. By enlightenment he understands that is the man´s release from his self-incurred tutelage. I am going to explain these key concepts for the better understanding of this textual commentary. By tutelage Kant means the inability of a person to make use of his own reason or understanding without the guidance from another. By self-incurred he means the tutelage which its motivation lies on lack of determination and courage. Therefore, Kant thinks that people lives under the tutelage, so we cannot think from ourselves; there is somebody else thinking for us.
