It was midnight, the movie theater was entirely occupied, each seat being utilized by an anxious fan awaiting the widely anticipated movie premier. Amid the spilling of popcorn and the dimming of lights whispers wafted through the room as last minute discussions and opinions were shared. Finally, darkness enveloped the space and an intensity settled on the crowd. Little to the viewers’ knowledge, they were to glimpse a society naively thought far from their own. The Hunger Games may appear to be based on fiction; nonetheless, upon careful examination multitudes of aspects can be traced to sociological theories and understandings that contribute to our society.

The Hunger Games is a process where twenty-four children, ages twelve to eighteen, are forced to undergo a rigorous process that eventually leaves only one of them alive. Hence, each year all new tributes are cohorts. In addition, the tributes are placed within a form of a total institution. The arena is isolated and the circumstances of the tributes are decided by officials in an outside establishment and by the rules of the game, which encourage the children to take part in actions otherwise not pursued naturally (i.e. killing). Looking purely on the socialization of Katniss several influences can be identified. First, her life course was impacted by anticipatory socialization, her father prepared her to be a provider and self-sufficient should anything happen to him by teaching her to hunt and scavenge as well as navigate The Hob. Later in her life, Katniss undergoes resocialization as she interacts with her team of stylists and Effie Trinket. When initially meeting these members of The Capital, Katniss does not relate; however, as she assimilates and interacts with their culture she begins to view them as normal people with relatable
