This essay examines two treatment interventions used for mental illness that are targeted specifically at depression in the pediatric population in the United States health care system. Mental health-based interventions are widely needed for the pediatric population. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the second leading cause of disability in the United States will be depression by the year 2020 (CDC, 2013). There are a wide range of psychotherapy interventions available today which have had a positive impact in reducing depression symptoms in this vulnerable population. Two well-researched psychotherapy interventions that have aided children in reducing these symptoms include Family Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Family Therapy looks at all the aspects in a child’s life that may be prolonging sadness and irritability. Alternatively, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy works to address stressors in the child’s life and promotes problem-solving skills. It is essential that Public Health address the complex health issue of depression in the pediatric population as this medical issue will significantly impact future generations.
