Margaret Atwood the author of “ The Handmaid's Tale” uses language to draw the reader's attention. Throughout the novel the author has several flashbacks. The flashbacks that she often has helps her escape from her reality. She also uses biblical references but her main focus is power. In the novel most of the women are fighting for power. Serena Joy tries to make offred look bad so she can conserve her power. She does this by taking every chance she gets to make sure offered knows that she is not above her. Offred tries to escape from her reality. The word “ escape” in this novel has a slightly different meaning from our everyday definition. Offred doesn’t literally try to “ escape” , However she often have flashback that help her escape her plight existence. There is no way for her to physically escape from the theocratic government so the only way she can escape is by thinking back to the when her life wasn’t this complicated. It was meant to keep the author interested. One type of language that she uses throughout the novel is religious language. The religious language she uses is supposed to help maintain the dictatorship government. Another type of language she uses is dialogue. Considering the fact that the characters in this novel can only say certain stuff because freedom of speech is limited. The characters in the novel are afraid of the potential punishment they can face if they say the wrong thing. As a result of brainwash, they pretty much got use to speaking a certain way.
