He had started it on November 11th 1950. The society started in Los Angeles, California. He had started this with 7 guys. Some of them were Rudi Gernreich, Dale Jennings, Bob Hull, Chuck Rowland, James Gruber and Konrad Stevens. Gruber and Stevens had started around a year after everyone else did. They got the name Mattachine Society from the medieval Mattachines.
In 1951 through 1953 he had done do much. In April 1951 he called for movement to challenge anti gay discrimination & the importance of building community. Around the time he did that he also started hosting group discussions. In 1953 he had sent questionnaires to political candidates. The questions were about their position on gay rights issues.
Later in his life he had written a book called ‘Radically Gay’. This was published in 1996. This book told his life story and what he had done during it. The book had been edited by Will Roscoe. The book had been nominated for a reward. The reward was Lambda Literary Award for Gay Men's
