Racialized slavery in the United States manifested prior to it becoming the United States. Its likely the United States was able to expand and become what it is with the use of racialized slavery, but the slavery was not inherent to the states, rather it was passed on from the English colonists that have used it in North America since the early-mid sixteen hundreds. In the movie 12 years a slave, there is a defining difference between the masters, one is sociogenic the other is phylogenic motivated. The movie is a prime example of the theory because it displays a part of the times where the “preconceived race consciousness” is not always the driving factor that used racialized …show more content…
One method to steer slavery in this direction is mentioned in Allen’s book, the invention of the white race. He mentions how restrictions were emplaced on African bond laborers to restrict reading and writing, and Irish Catholics had similar restrictions but were still availed to higher earning lucrative jobs (Allen, pg.85). This illustrates the move toward long term labor that lets the owners hold onto their investment and with enough slaves, more human slaves could be made without ever needing or even recognizing the power reading and writing could play in upward mobility, ultimately towards freedom. Further, this makes the transition of the Africans to the lowest part of society and the Irish a step-up smoother. The younger and unborn Africans wouldn’t have the education that could challenge slave holders when they came of working age, thus keeping them at the bottom and it worked well enough the US put up with the injustice until it was industrialized enough to address it nationally.

Handlin’s, Degler-Jordan and Morgan’s theory can all be applied to the argument made. Racialized slaver manifested in the United States because the economy may have needed it, it was socially permissible at the time, it provided another economy of slave trade and it was a learned working method the British left behind.
