The Growing Rate of Autism Autism, also known as ASD is a spectrum disorder is “range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences.” (Autism Speaks). Autism affects the X chromosome; therefore, the disorder is prevalent in males. The number of children affected by autism has grown over the last 12 years significantly. According to the CDC in the year 2000, 1 in 150 children were affected in someway by autism and stayed around the same number the next year these numbers were compiled. The number has risen to 1 in every 68 children within 12 years, that is about 119% rise in the prevalence of autism in all children. We may be a long ways away from completely figuring autism but I think we must realize that we need to educate and make sure everyone understands autism and how to work with children that have it. 161 children out of 10,000 have been diagnosed with autism in Japan making it hold the highest autism rate. (WorldAtlas.com) We can only see that number continue to grow in countries like Japan and our very own country can only see that number to grow. While autism tends to only affect social skills, it is a very serious matter and it is something that should be taken care. Vaccines have been the blame for autism for many years now and they were considered the reason for the growing rate of autism and it is simply not true, It’s quite alarming and we need to figure out what we can do to stop the growth of
