The goal of Mexican grey wolf recovery program in Arizona and New Mexico is to establish a self sustaining population and eventual removal from the endangered species list. However, the procedures of the program are counterproductive to its goal first off the breeding program that was used prior to the initial release that had the wolves being handled by humans from birth. Then place of release the national forest of New Mexico and Arizona a massive span of land making extremely hard to regulate the wolf population and possible threats to it. Furthermore the program itself after breeding and release is propped up by human intervention let it be feeding caches or removal of indivual wolves that wander …show more content…
The (SSP) or Species Survival plan program manages all Mexican grey wolf breeding beginning in 1977 with the capture of five of the last wild Mexican grey wolfs. After that point the actual breeding program itself began having the goal of housed population of 250 -400 hundred while selecting which ones to be released based certain criteria. () The problem this creates with the formation of sustainable population is that all the wolves in the (SSP) population are handled by humans and feed zoo based diets of carnivore logs and a kibble diet made for their dietary needs. This means the wolves become used human interaction and also have no hunting experience what so ever. The program advocates that they foster wild environments and minimum human interactions but feeding them and keeping them captive for span of sixteen years before the initial release does not make wild nor sustainable population. This is reflected by the population numbers after the release in 1996 of 100 wolves it took till 2014 for the number to be passed with 109 wolves in the …show more content…
Also there isn’t as much regulation on national forest lands as there is in parks or other federally owned lands. This leads to hunting and killing or the introduced wolf population especially so if there not afraid of humans due the breeding programs the where released from. Within the first five years of the program the highest cause of death has been human related gun shoot or vehicle collision.() There also the problem of keeping people form feeding the wolves in national parks this can be curved however, national forest resources aren’t just dedicated to keeping humans from making the wolves further acclimated with humans. The risk of acclimation and its related problems exist at campgrounds within the Mexican wolf reintroduction area. Once acclimated to humans, wolves pose a higher risk to pet dogs, people and themselves.() Over the time of the current reintroduction project, some Mexican grey wolves have become so acclimated to human presences they persists in camp sites even with intense harassment. These wolves had to be recaptured and relocated to captivity. Other wolves who where no recaptured and persisted in human areas experienced high mortality rates () The dangers to new population wolves in such large and difficult area regulate is further proven when comparing the
