Our modern day technology is starting to mirror George Orwell's vision in 1984. Throughout the years, our technology has progressed and has become more efficient than it has been in previous years. Even our smartphones that we sit in our back pocket or the laptops we carry around us are more innovative than all of the technology combined in the 60s and 70s. This may be an advantage to our everyday life, but at what cost? The government can be recognized as “all knowing” and you may think that you are safe within the privacy of your own home or when it comes to your location settings being disabled, but is that always the case? Winston worked in the Ministry of Truth, where they did exactly this. In the book, it clearly states, “Winston’s job was to rectify the original figures by making them agree with the later ones” (Orwell, p.39). Past events were always changing, if the government was not correct about something, it was changed. Its as if nothing was really a reality anymore, just a lie that Oceanias people lived in and were okay with. Once the media starts drifting and becomes more of an outdated resource for news built on lies, what will happen? With nobody knowing the truth and believing the lies, Big Brother has all of the power. Winston says “For how could you establish even the most obvious fact when there existed no record outside your own memory” (Orwell, p.39) and I couldn’t agree more. How are you supposed to remember something clearly when your own trusted government has changed what they've said time and time again? With their media controlling what they believe, the citizens can no longer think for themselves. This is exactly what a totalitarian government wants, full control, and we may soon see this in our own society if we are not
