THE TORTURE
SETTING: The play takes place in the 1984 in a cell, Room 101. STAGE LEFT is one telescreen and a door. CENTER STAGE is a camp bed, just big enough to lie on. STAGE RIGHT is another telescreen and a lavatory pan. Concealed lamps are hanging from the prop bar.
LIGHTS UP: Winston Smith is fixed on the camp bed and cannot move. O’Brien stands by his side. A male in a white gown, carrying a hypodermic needle stands on the other side. Winston: (muttering) The past exists in records and … in human memories.
O’Brien: Great! The Party checks all records, and we regulate all memories, then we control the past, don’t we?
Winston: (in rage) How can you stop us from remembering things? It is totally involuntary. Even though you have controlled all other’s mind, you can’t control mine.
O’Brien: It is impossible to see the reality except from the eyes of the Party. This is a truth that you have to learn, Winston. Can you still recall, in your diary, you defined freedom as the right to say that four plus four equals four?
Winston: (firmly) Yes.
O’Brien: (extend four finger out) What if the Party says this is five but not four? Is this still four?
Winston: This is
