The Party has to always make sure that there is an enemy out there so that they can be the ones to protect the people from that enemy. People fearing Goldstein is a good thing because then everyone will love Big Brother since he is the one protecting them from Goldstein. During the Two Minutes Hate the picture of the enemy “melted into the face of Big Brother, black-haired, black-mustachio’d, full of power and mysterious calm, and so vast that it almost filled up the screen.” (Orwell 16). When people saw the picture of Big Brother on the screen they begin to praise him. The Two Minute Hate is supposed to have a control on the people’s emotions. It is effective since instead of people bottling up their emotions, they all release it towards the enemy of the Party. They also feel that they are being protected by Big Brother. Pain is an effective way to control society. The people who stray away from the Party are brought into the Ministry of Love and are tortured. They are broken down so that the Party can reconstruct them into the people who follow the rules of the Party and love Big Brother. After they are changed, they could be vaporized as members of the Party and not enemies.
