The occurrence where a family becomes impoverished for over two generation, such that the family has no surviving ancestors that can pass on the intellectual, cultural and social capital that is necessary to help the family get out of the poor condition has been a problem of generational poverty and a great contributor to the level of dependency. These families tend to rely on the welfare system for survival for prolonged periods and if these benefits were to be cut, they would be able to meet their daily living expenses. Though there are some domino effects experienced by these changes in income, the latter tend to remain hopeful knowing that the situation is just a passing setback, which is not the case with the former. Children from these backgrounds tend to perform poorly in academics especially in their base years in school. The rate of dropping out is high for these students. Education can help turn around the future of children, but only if they excel in their studies. The main causes of their failure is the lack of health care, family care, absenteeism and transportation all associated with poverty. The government and authorities should work toward reducing the cost and trying to turn around the lives of these families. To do so, the authorities can ensure the children have a better chance of living. This can be done by getting the children back to school and also putting the adults back to the path of work. Instead of setting up the welfare system to provide food for these families, a “workfare” program should be initiated to put families to work. Creating more working opportunities creates a long lasting solution and also reduces the high cost that these families place on the public sector each year.
Improving the perception, mental and general attitude can be of great positive outcome. Negative thinking and perception is one amongst the largest contributors to generational poverty and other problems. To improve the aspects fighting generational poverty, changing how people think and how they perceive their lives and their situation is vital. This can be done by making the people not to feel like outcasts and that they hold an important place the society at large by allowing them participate in society related activities, making them feel that their contribution is
