Gender Roles in America
The gender roles have evolved drastically over the decades. According to, a gender role is a set of societal norms dictating what types of behaviors are generally considered acceptable, appropriate, or desirable for a person based on their actual or perceived sex. Gender roles are typically based on different expectations of individuals based on their sex. Sex refers to a person’s biological status as a male or female. The roles assigned to a particular sex depends on many factors. The typical roles assigned to women were the household duties. The duties consisted of cooking meal, cleaning rooms, taking care of the children and their individual needs. The men were dimmed the breadwinners and went out into the workforce to provide for their families. A question could be asked if gender roles are based on biology or culture? If you look at the cultural side of the argument you will see women filling the roles that require passion and nurturing. The men will be filling the roles that require physical strength and inexpressive actions. The biological argument would assert that men are physically stronger than women, men are more direct and women are more diplomatic and women show more affection and men are more task oriented.
