Gender inequality refers to the unequal treatment of someone of the opposite sex. Black women often face gender inequality in almost every endeavor that they participate in. Simien states that “gender (in)equality exists within the black community and beyond” (14). The society that Black women face is a male dominated society, whether it be in a black community or not. Black women face gender inequality throughout every community that they go to. Black feminists have stated that gender inequality is something that is taught at a young age. It has been said that the black church has a part to play when it comes to advocating for gender inequality. According to Simien she believes that “the black church is perhaps the most important social institution in the black community. It has validated the patriarchal nature of male-female relationships through sermons and teachings of gender inequality” (19).
