As children growing up in today’s world, our parents, siblings, friends and teachers teach us things that we aren’t even aware of. So many moms and dads teach their toddlers to play with certain toys that distinguish them as boys or girls. No Dad today wants to see their little boy playing with a Barbie. These lessons only become more frequent as we grow into the people we are. I have chosen to write my paper on gender roles and sexism in the societies we live in today. I am interested in this subject because for me, I feel that it is so crazy that we are molded into what everyone else wants us to be from the time we are born, yet it all changes as we become who we want to be. Our book states, “Gender role refers to the attitudes, behavior, and activities that are socially defines as appropriate for each sex and learned through the socialization process”. In other words, the way that we act, live, and even love in today’s society is how we are perceived as male or female today. The book also gives an example that men are usually associated with being tough while women are supposed to be the nurturers of the society (Kendall). As a 20 year old woman, I feel that I have never payed enough attention to when people make snide comments about “the battle of the sexes” as I do now.
