If you believe that the only way you can get revenge on someone who hurt you,is to hurt them back, you are just as low as them. You are not more powerful or more smart then they are. Fredrick Douglass is saying that whoever treats you like your nothing, is not only hurting you but also hurting them self. And when they treat you like your less, they are degrading their own life. Frederick Douglass depicts what life was like as a slave for people like Mr. Plummer and Mr. Severe. Using Ethos to grab the attention of the audience to tell his story and have them listen. Here Douglass describes what life was like being a slave for extremely cruel people like Mr. Plummer and Mr. Severe, both of whom overused the punishment of being whipped and treated their slave with little to no respect. "Mr. Plummer was a miserable drunkard, a profane swearer, and a savage monster. He always went armed with a cow skin and a heavy cudgel. I have known him to cut and slash the women 's heads so horribly, that even master would be enraged at his cruelty, and would threaten to whip him if he did not mind himself."(Douglass 50). Mr. Plummer, an overseer for the actual master Captain Anthony, Douglass tells what he was like and how he would treat the slaves so poorly that even the master was shocked by his horrific punishment.
