Finding Neverland is the story of J. M. Barrie, a playwright, who finds inspiration for the play Peter Pan through the four Davies boys and their mother Sylvia. Besides the fact that Johnny Depp is possibly one of the greatest actors of our time, this is a splendid film. Barrie needs inspiration for his next play and finds it while playing with all four of the Davies boys as they use their imagination. The editing in this movie helps show the viewer not only the reality of their pretending but also what their pretending looks like in their imagination. I found this to be the most interesting display of editing in the film. Although Finding Neverland was nominated for best editing, it did not win in 2004; the film did win best music at the Oscars that year. The film is truly incredible in both categories though. In the opening scene of Finding Neverland it shows Mr. Barrie watching an audience react to the opening night of one of his plays. This scene has multiple cuts, going from Barrie to the stage and then back to the audience. It doesn’t seem to show all three of those in the same shot because the viewer is supposed to see disconnect between the audience, the actors in the play, and the playwright, Barrie. At the very end of the first scene it shows a shot of Barrie looking out at the audience and it begins to rain in the theatre.
