Case Summary & Background
Patrick Marlowe, who is a former correctional officer of Wilson County in Lebanon, Tennessee, was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges relating to violations of the civil rights of inmates at the Wilson County Jail. Mr. Marlowe was the supervisory corrections officer on the evening shift of the Wilson County Jail from 2001 to early 2003 (Burke, 2006). He and several former correctional officers were convicted at trial of conspiring to violate the rights of inmates at the jail by assaulting and depriving them of medical care. Over the course of two years Mr. Marlowe engaged in routine beatings of detainees, these counts included convictions for assaulting inmate Walter Kuntz (Hunter, 2007). After seriously injuring Mr. Kuntz, Mr. Marlowe failed to call for medical care for several hours as Mr. Kuntz lay unconscious on the floor of the jail. Hunter (2007) stated that Kuntz eventually died from his injuries and the delay in receiving medical care. Mr. Marlowe and seven other former Wilson County corrections officers have been convicted and sentenced on felony charges relating to violations of the civil rights of inmates at the Wilson County Jail. Not only that, but when a person is in custody in this jail then that can affect their court trial. For example, if an inmate receives any injuries that happened when being arrested or at the jail, then the defense lawyer can claim that his client could have received these injuries at the jail. Using evidence of the previous misconduct and will affect the inmates sentence and harms the jail reputations. I believe that justice is served because Mr. Marlowe is facing life for his actions and other guards who were part of the beating are facing charges as
