Yangxia and Dali came from the rural area to the city. They plan to go home if things did not go well, however, they stayed even when things did not go well. Chang reports,“Before they went out from home, the two girls had made a pact: If jobs at the first factory fell through, they would go straight home. But when jobs at the first factory fell through, they stayed. They had come to the city, and already they were changed” (23). At the time when they arrive, they have already choose to stay in the city. The first step, they have already changed themselves. They are already building different perspective of how they see the world. Next, education change the girls’ view on how they look at things and it also change their life. Lu Qingmin was born in the village. Women live there had to plant rice and being rape. Chang reports, “In the village where Lu Qingmin was born, almost everyone shared her family name. Ninety households lived there, planting rice, rape, and cotton on small plots of land” (9).Women are lack of education and people treat them with no respect. On the other hand, women who has the courage and wanted respect are eager to leave the village. Leslie came to Dongguan for the first time in her life on February 2004. She spent two months in Dongguan visited female workers in the factory. Workers had to take night classes at night time and work at day time. One time Leslie had to take bus from Shenzhen to Dongguan, and she encountered the evil men who intended to touch her, she was advised by the woman next to her saying she should have taken the buses where the bus people dress in uniform. Leslie writes, “ ‘There are no taxis here,’ I said to the ticket seller. ‘I’m not getting off’” (37). Dongguan, a developing city where dangerous men around making money. She rejected anyone who intended to touch her, her courage and bravery made her said it outloud in the bus. Leslie Change is an example of brave and strong woman in today’s society. She has a great job at Wall Street, but she choose to challenge herself and really puts herself into a different country to explore the truth of the factory girls’ workers and also suffers with the girls in the city.
Independent girls are usually from poor family, but they learn to be independent and handle many things in life by themselves. They never ask for a man or depend on a man for living.
