There many different kinds of misunderstandings and misconceptions regarding ways to communicate effectively such as “The person will understand as long as I say it”, “The more I say, the more likely he/she will understand”, “Understanding will develop the more we communicate”, etc. Communication is not just merely saying but everything involving volume, intonation, body language, etc. to reach mutual understanding.
Interpersonal communication is when two or more people interact with each other using many forms of communication to deliver and express feelings and ideas and also to give understanding. Firstly, it is inescapable, as we are always involved in interactions with our surroundings. Secondly, it is irreversible, meaning that one cannot take back the message that has been delivered or said. Thirdly, interpersonal communication is complicated as it involves various factors and variables such as how you see and think of yourself, how you perceive the other person, how the other person perceive you, how the other person perceive him/herself, and how the other person think of how you perceive him/her. • These theories focuses more on the messages’ context like functions, forms and content.
• Communicaion Accomodation Theory
• This theory focuses on how individuals maintain and modify their behaviour during communication. This theory allows the ability to predict and explain verbal and nonverbal messages made by patients or healthcare providers.
• Facework and Politeness Theory
• Facework is an action in which the healthcare provider or patient maintain their facial expression.
• According to Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory , a person also has to maintain others’ face other than his/her own face.
3. Relationship centered Theories
• These theories explain regarding the exposure of information in personal relationships.
• Social Penetration and Norm of Reciprocity
• This theory is made to explain closeness within relationships and development of relationships.
• Communication Privacy Management
• The development of this theory is due to the need to understand the concealing and revealing process of private
