The Four Components Of Interpersonal Effectiveness

Improved Essays
The four components of interpersonal effectiveness are competence, mindfulness, ethics and emotional intelligence. Competence is the ability to accomplish a goal. I believe to accomplish a goal you have to feel motivated to want to start, work on, and finish a goal. Without motivation, it can cause a decrease in competence. At this point in my life, I do question my competence, only because my motivation tends to waiver according to my constant mood. This is something my husband and I know that I need to work on. He tells me how, I always start goals, but my mood can either help me push through or abandon my goal. Most times, I do really good with goals as long as I keep a positive mind and don’t allow others or my thinking to get the best …show more content…
As a young child I’ve always believe that you have to treat others with the same respect that you want them to treat you. When confronted with choices in my daily life, I try to see the bigger picture and take into consideration the effect of my actions and choices. When speaking with my husband, he tells me, how he looks up to me in this aspect. How I always go beyond to try make sure I treat others with respect and make the right choice. I have to admit, that although most of my friends and family will say this about me, I do have a hard time making choices. It’s not always easy making the correct choice, but I do my best. I think now as a mother, I have a harder time, because I am not only making choices for myself but for this little person that looks up to me. So having to show respect to others and have good morals is something I want him to learn and be able to do when he gets …show more content…
I scored a six on self-awareness, nine in self-management, eight in social awareness, and a nine in relationship management. I do agree with this test because, when it comes to Self-awareness, I lack in knowing how to read and understand my emotions, as well as lack in self-confidence, by not knowing my self-worth. This is something that I struggled my whole life, and I think it has to do with the environment and people I grew up with. As for the other three I scored pretty well, and know that I’ve learned them from experience, but wouldn’t hurt if I worked a little more to try and understand each one and better those skills.
The way I believe these tenets of interpersonal communication affect me personally, academically, and professionally is by improving my skills. Through communicating I can get feedback necessary to improve my performance, in school, work and home. Without this communication I feel that I wouldn’t be able to improve my ways or skills. This in the future will help me be more optimistic, calm, confident and charismatic. These are qualities that most jobs look for and people in general like to have

Interpersonal Communication is defined as, “the process that we use to communicate our ideas, thoughts, and feelings to another person.” Although I agree with this definition, I find it rather vague. The screamfree.com website offers advice on how to respond to almost any type of situation as opposed to reacting (Runkel, 2017). Strangely enough, the straightforward message on how “peace begins with a pause,” specifically hit home (Runkel, 2017). Moreover, it brought memories to mind that most of my thirties were spent attempting to find solutions to obstacles by springing into action without thought to the consequences. Although, fortunately, during my early forties I was blessed with receiving parenting classes that taught the value in taking the time to consider the details before giving a commitment to the many questions that children might ask. Accordingly, the screamfree.com website and the parenting classes coincide closely with communication in the workplace.…

Growing up in one of the poorest regions of the United States has taught me two things; one, we are not defined by stereotypes, and two, hardships are made to be overcome. Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Middlesboro, KY sits on the Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia border. The multicolored fall foliage and the vivid green mountains in the spring are disserved by the descriptor spectacular. My roots are firmly nestled in the Cumberland Gap where Daniel Boone started his journey to the West decades ago. I am proud to call myself an Appalachian-American.…
