So the king went all through the crowd with his hat, swabbing his eyes, and blessing the people and praising them and thanking them for being so good to the poor pirates away off there and got back to raft and he collected 87 dollars”(Twain page 100). These two con men fake an act in order to self-gain and make money off this church in order to have wealth and go up in society. He even went out of his own way to make himself cry in order for everyone to hand over a collection for him. This shows even back then people would do anything for just a quick buck than a job. In the same fashion when the King and Duke perform a “first class show” for a big town just to get big bucks and leave.” he rolled up the curtain, and the next minute the king come a-prancing out on all fours, naked; and he was painted all over, ring-streaked-and-striped, all sorts of colors, and then the duke lets the curtain down, and bows to the people”(Twain page 114). The crowd soon realizes that they have been “sold” for watching this horrible play.
