In this story there are many reasons that show the desire of someone new and the greed these characters have. Early in the book at a party we saw one of the first quotes of betrayal. Myrtle had overheard one of Tom’s conversations and put her chime in to say: "I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn't fit to lick my shoe." (33-34)This was directed towards her husband George who she thought was the right one, but says that he’s not what she thought he was and implies that she wants somebody else.
Later in the story it is found out that that someone else in Myrtle’s case was Tom. This is a great example in how quickly someone can change and be selfish enough to throw away a marriage for their desire for somebody else. Nick was temped a few times to fall for her like when he: “Drew her toward me (him) and asked her to dinner.” And when he: “Drew her up again closer, this time to my (his) face.”(79-80) Jordan is more of a representation of Gatsby in a way that she cheated to get where she is today. She cheated to get popularity and Gatsby cheated by bootlegging to make a living for those desires. In a way Nick and Jordan’s relationship is a mask of what should be done in Nick’s cousin Daisy’s relationship with Gatsby. Nick chose to not be with a cheat and a scandal and Daisy needed to make that same decision to throw away her desire of being with
