Imagine being treated like an animal, or thought of as less than human. How would you feel? This is how the Jews were treated during the Holocaust. The Jews were harshly treated and dehumanized while they were in concentration camps. The story “Night” by Elie Wiesel depicts how the Jews were constantly dehumanized during the Holocaust.
One way dehumanization was shown was in the beginning of the book when the Jews were on the way to the concentration camps. The Jews dehumanized one of their own people when they hit Mrs. Schachter to keep her quiet. The book quotes, “She received several blows to the head, blows that could have been lethal.” (Wiesel, 26) Even though Ms. Schachter was a woman with a young child, people caused her harm just so that their ride could be quieter. The SS officers in the camp treated the prisoners so harshly. They didn’t give them basic necessities to survive and many people died because of this. This is shown in the book where it states, “We received no food, we lived on snow.” (Wiesel, 100) This shows harsh the conditions were in the camp because all the food they had was snow.
