Introduction
The topic for the Evidence Based Practice Proposal is Type 1 Diabetes. I want to know what interventions can be provided such as education that will encourage patients with this disease to maintain better control of blood glucose levels. A hemoglobin A1c level is an indicator of how well controlled the patients’ blood sugar levels are, and how well they manage their diabetes over the course of three to four months. The hemoglobin A1c test is checked by having blood drawn or by using a machine and finger prick (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2015). Most Type 1 diabetics are on an intensive daily insulin regimen through insulin injections or insulin pump therapy that requires constant thought and attention. These patients are also required to check their blood sugars with blood glucose monitors and a finger prick several times daily (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2015). Even the most devoted and compliant patients living with this disease face dangerously high and low blood sugars unexpectedly, which can damage the body and become life threatening. Sporadic blood sugar levels can ultimately lead to blindness, nerve damage, kidney failure, and pregnancy complications (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2015).
