“A Worn Path” Written by Eudora Welty is about an old grandmother named Phoenix Jackson. Phoenix is a black woman that is traveling on a path she has been down many times before. This is why the path is worn. While reading this story it’s not clear where Phoenix is headed or why she’s even going anywhere. The one thing we do know is she is determined to get to her destination. You later find out she is traveling this path for her grandson. Welty writes " ‘My little grandson, he sit up there in the house all wrapped up, waiting by himself,’ Phoenix went on. " ‘We is the only two left in the world. He suffer and it don 't seem to put him back at all.’” This quote allows you to see the importance of the story and the connection Phoenix’s grandson has to her journey. Welty makes no mention of Phoenix grandson while on her journey. He is almost hidden from the readers. It’s almost as if she doesn’t want you to know at first what is going on. Phoenix just continues to travel on her path and the reader is left to wonder where is she headed. What is the purpose of her journey? All we know is Phoenix is on a mission and heading somewhere. The mission must be one of great importance because this old grandmother is outside in the winter alone. In the quote Welty wrote Phoenix’s grandson was sitting in the home alone waiting for her return. Phoenix is written to be crawling on the ground to get past barbwire and at one point she’s also stuck by thorns and almost rips her dress. Only…
