Each element of ethnographic fieldwork has room to move and change and is specific to that anthropologist and that study. Ethnographic fieldwork is unique in the fact that neutrality of the author isn’t always necessary in the presentation of an anthropologist’s findings but is present in the context of their findings. Incorporating emotions and personal accounts do not necessarily weaken your argument or question the validity of your studies, but instead enhances it. The glory of anthropological methodology is in the diversity it offers in its…
This chapter also talks about women's role in anthropology and how opening anthropology to study women in society affected social structure and daily activities in the way people interact in a culture. It also shows us some of the problems and rewards of anthropologists working and studying in their own cultures. This chapter also gives us insight to the new roles for ethnographic data collection as the book states, " using techniques such as questionnaires, social surveys, archival material, government documents, and court records in addition to participate observations." (Nanda, Warms,…
Performing ethnographic fieldwork can be challenging, especially when it comes to building rapport with your subjects. Often times the subjects of the research may feel intimidated, judged or like they won’t be understood when being interviewed. In order to get the best results from their research, fieldworkers need to make sure their subjects feel comfortable in sharing all aspects of their life in regards to what they are studying. Anne Fadiman and Joshua Reno both work to build relationships with the people they study through participant observation to gain trust and get an inside look into their social and cultural worlds.…

Psychology researchers used variety of methods to produce valid and reliable studies about human behaviour. Deriving from the second, sixth and seventh chapters of Investigating Psychology, this essay will discuss about the different approaches to studying the effect of obedience on people behaviour, children social actions and friendships, and how neuropsychology studied the way the brain work and control the cognitive process of language, using the technologically advanced methods or not using them. An important approach is the classic experiment, which was used to explore many psychological fields by studying the effect of manipulating some variables on another. One example is the obedience study by Stanley Milgram, (Banyard, 2012, page…
When we fail to comply with certain standards, which are put in place by society we are often shunned from those who choose to comply with these values. After observing different social settings as well as the expected behavior in those settings I choose to focus my attention on ordering etiquette in fast food restaurants. In each of the fast food restaurants I observed in both the Hub and along downtown East College Avenue I noticed three elements of expected behavior. The first was to place an order to your cashier in first person. The second, consumers were expected to pay for their purchases.…
On September 11, 2011, a new memorial, honoring those who perished in the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon ten years prior, officially opened to the public. One feature that makes this memorial so unique is that the structures erected to remember those victims are actually located in the foundation that the Twin Towers originally stood. Since then, the memorial, located in downtown Manhattan, has hosted thousands of guests, all who have come to witness and visit the space that has animated 21st century American history, politics, and identity. Here, this site will serve as the field to which I will be conducting my ethnographic research this semester. The subject of my research will focus on the question of how do society…

In this paper, we present a framework for qualitative inquiry in social systems. The concept of this mind-ware, which is not articulated before, has been used by many decision makers like police detectives and military commanders in their initiatives. First, we review and construct the framework over three fundaments: 1- problem solving process, 2- theory of qualitative data analysis, and 3- correlation matrices.…
“In this ideology, walking functions as an emblem of the simple man and as, when the walk is solitary and rural, a means of being in nature and outside of society”(Solnit, Pg. 18) Walking is always overlooked, and is only looked at as one way of many to get from point A to point B. I feel Solnit had a great point when she illustrates how important walking is in the world. Walking is a great way to connect to your environment. When you walk you are always connected with your environment. You are looking at different things, walking on different surfaces, touching different objects, and are breathing and smelling various substances. I feel you cannot have environmental art without including walking.…
Maria Chona’s life was during a transitional time for her people. When she was born, her Tohono O’odham people lived their lives in a traditional way without many outsiders. Tohono O’odham had contact and were influenced by the Spanish, but still retained many aspects of their culture. Towards the end of her life, around 1936, Chona’s people had connections to Tucson and Anglo outsiders. This was a stark contrast from when she was born.…

With the billions of people out there in the world living today, it causes a lot of cultures to arise. On the other hand, all these different cultures ancient or modern, are not a negative thing, in fact, it is not only positive, but also significant, with the diverse world we live in today. With that being said, the Meras were a small, yet significant ancient civilization with a rich and long culture, known to few till this day. They were a highly advanced, ancient society living near what today is now Nevada. They withstood hot, dry summers with barely any precipitation, and cold, windy winters.…
Accessing the health need in a malaria endemic districts can be challenging, normally the health issues exist along with other health and socio-economic problems like poverty, unemployment and poor housing. Despite the benefits of the health need assessment (HNA), implementation of this tool is a difficult task the health professional for various reasons.
