African American are portrayed as the “ignorant” scum of society, the slaves to their own race and the epitome of human suffering. They have the vision of becoming equal to those that had once influenced them. Having that motivation creates the need of pursuing answers through life experiences and the ideals of those that surround the goal of ascending to a new level. In the literary novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston, it is illustrated how the African-Americans are not as simple as once portrayed. Strangely we see how the only time that two African Americans were truly unified were Janie and Teacake. All other times in the novel, only division is seen. The terrible chemistry of Janie and her previous husbands, the hatred towards Nanny, the discontempt of Janie’s life, the sadness and pain Janie had in her heart for so long all are prime examples of how divided the world truly is. The innocence of Janie as a child are what the mindset of a utopian society wish to obtain. For her not to see color just creates the mind of an innocent, the mind of someone who will be awoken by the real world since her eyes had only watched god. However, while the innocence is portrayed in Janie’s youth it is apparent that other individuals such as Ms. Turner are what is spewing filth into the world and rotting the tree that nurtures the fruit of the world. She is an African woman who expels hatred to her own race.Ms. Turner even says (164,Hurston)”You’se different from me.
