First reason the era of reconstruction was more of a failure is because of the black codes. The black codes were created to limit the rights of newly freed slaves. Which were created by Opelousas. Document E, Black codes, supports my thesis because it talks about when the slaves were freed, some whites did not agree/like the idea that they were being freed. What happened was that the whites started to riot leading to violence. Document E says “Some reports put the number killed even higher, ranging from 200-300”. This was the one of the worst tragedies of reconstruction violence in Louisiana. After this incident the black codes were created. An example of a black code is ‘No negro or freedmen shall be allowed to come within the limits (of the town of Opelousas) without special permit in writing from his employer. The Freedman’s Bureau was created by congress in 1865, the first major federal relief agency in the united states. Document G, Freedman’s Bureau 1865-1872 supports that the era of reconstruction was a success because it gave the free slaves a lot of opportunities to keep forward.
