Esau was a hunter and Jacob was a cultivator, a grower, a shepherd. Esau was a one day man while Jacob savoured the best out of what today holds and prepares to confront the future with hope. As a farmer who clears the bush, tills the ground, plants the seed on the prepared soil, weeds the grounds and painstakingly watches and waits until his labour is due for harvesting before setting forth the sickle to gather into his barns so was Jacob who could conceive and walk through his goals undeterred until expected result is achieved.
A cultivator is one that breaks up the soil and removes weeds that are inimical to the seeds and future harvest. He is apt to identify, willing to prepare and ready to remove barriers that stand to stop him from set goals. A cultivator is one that utilises instruments at his disposal to break up obstacles that hamper future performances and fruitfulness. He anticipates the future; he doesn’t

Thus there is the need to be guided and guarded from predators. The shepherd comes in handy to fulfil these roles.
Every shepherd is noted for carrying both the rod which serves as staff also. The rod is for judgment and punishment and the staff for correction and comfort. He doesn’t need to carry two separate sticks to exercise these functions. When the sheep strays, the rod is always handy to make it fall in line while the staff is for a tap on the back for being of good behaviour. This is what is known today as the carrot and stick approach in handling human issues in management circle.
Jesus is the Lamb of God. He is equally the Lion of the tribe of Judah. When it was essential for Him to appear as a sheep, He did and was sacrificed for our sins. This never diminished the Lion of Judah He is. Very soon He will manifest as the Lion He is to exact authority and rule, then every form of disobedience will be brought under His
