The story follows him in his old life, and back to his young life as he meets new friends, his wife, and lives life in the circus. Throughout the book, the story switches back and forth between old and young Jacob, and eventually ideas start to connect and we see how little Jacob progressed into old and experienced Jacob. Jacob’s weaknesses are shown and his innocence turns to anger. He is also left without a stable job in his future, because he was going to work for his dad, who was also a veterinarian doctor. Jacob’s life is basically turned upside down in a few moments, as he goes from a chance in life, to back at the bottom, with no urge to work his way back up in the world.
One day, it just so happens that Jacob runs into a circus, who is in need of people to help them with the whole entertainment process. Jacob is a veterinarian, so he has that special skill of working with animals. He will fight in just right with the circus, or so he thinks. If it weren’t for all the distractions that get in the way, he would be perfectly fine. Distractions are inevitable, though. The Benzini Brothers take in Jacob as one of their own circus friends, and he becomes part of the family. This is a total change of events in Jacob’s life. He went from being in Veterinary school, to joining a circus. This is very drastic and no where near where Jacob expected to see himself. His parents’ death really took a toll on him and changed him. Water for Elephants By; Chasity Laporte Water for Elephants was published in 2006, and was banned in Bedford, N.H. School District (2010) after a parent complained about the book's sexual content, violence but still an amazing story in my own opinion. This book is an epic love story between a man named Jacob Jankowski, woman named Marlena, and Marlena's husband August who is a cruel man, and a beautiful elephants named Rosie, but why would such a amazing book be banned? I ask the same question. The sexule content between Marlena, and Jacob is pretty wild. The first kiss between Marlena and Jacob is reminiscent of the scene when the two of them dance in front of Rosie.…

After reading Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen, I have decided to give it 4.5 out of five stars. Although this novel contains a lot of death and tragedy, it offers the reader a look into The Great Depression and how it affected the people living during that time period. One of the novel’s strengths was the way the author was able to almost effortlessly switch between past and present without confusing the reader. Gruen made sure to incorporate both ninety-three-year-old Jacob and twenty-year-old Jacob equally in a way so his background supported and enhanced his current story. Another strength was how historically accurate the book is.…

In this passage, Odets highlights Jacob's age as one of the character's major obstacles. Jacob cannot incite the revolution because those around him dismiss his ideas due to his age, thus he must put that burden onto Ralph. The most obvious way Odets emphasizes Jacob’s age is by having Jacob refer to the younger Ralph as "boychick" (74). This Yiddish term is used to refer to young boys, and since Ralph is given as in his twenties, for Jacob to be using such a term he must be significantly older than the boy.…
