Context and Meaning, Teaching Vocabulary

The following exercise concentrates on the techniques how a specific word could be explained to ESL/EFL students. Teacher provides material and students will try to create sentences.

smooth

The word 'smooth' can be used in different context. The meanings can be explained by realia or pictures and even through a video clip. Each definition of 'smooth' can be an object for a short in-pair presentation to verify understanding. Some interesting realia to identify the meaning of smooth are: table or whiteboard vs. sandpaper; jeans vs. t-shirt (Students can use their sense of touch)

First teaching through the synonyms: beginning, introduction or first time ever seen. Through CCQ: “Today is Micky Mouse 88 years of age. When was his debut?” Pair-work: “Find famous debut appearances, music, movies, books” Present to students.
2. average
Explaining through math: 10 + 8 = 18; 18 /2 = 9; CCQ and group discussion: “What is the average of your weekly spending’s?”
3. beverage
Introduction through realia. Pair-work: Country is given by teacher, students have to prepare a drawing. “What is the favorite beverage of the country? Can you tell some interesting information?” Group discussion about the presentations.
4. success
Explanation through hand sign “V” for victory. Showing picture “Dagobert Duck”. Exercise: “Write five words, how you will get successful?” Presentation and discussion.
5. bought up the rights
Grammar: bought-past tense, buy-present tense
Explain “buy up the rights” through realia. Each textbook shows the publisher and the copyright owner. Pair-work: “Give some example from the industry for 'buy/bought up the rights.” Presentations.
6. endorse
Explanation by realia. Pointing out brand names of students clothing. Pair-work: “How can you endorse a product and earn money?” Group
