Ernest And John Lawrence's Influence On Nuclear Science

Inspiring society to change the scientific enterprise, Hevesy’s creation of a privately funded study led to a rise in research by intellects at institutions. Two physicists, Ernest and John Lawrence both acknowledged the recent progressions that had taken place in the private sector of nuclear medicine. Introducing the private industry to nuclear medicine, the Berkley physicists understood the potential that advancements in the study presented in medicine for treating cancer and thyroid disease. Ernest and John Lawrence’s experiments would go on to change both science and its influence on nuclear medicine. The private study of atomic medicine presented a progression in medicine that would aid society by the invention of the first cyclotron in the early 1930s.
Introducing a new technology to the study of using radioactive materials in medicine, the cyclotron allowed the creation of larger amounts of energy and radiation. The invention, Ernest found

John Lawrence acknowledged the dangers and benefits that the uses of his brother’s invention could have in progressing nuclear medicine research. Barraging atoms with neutrons presented several hazardous problems that scientists confronted in their experiments while researching the uses for nuclear physics in medicine. Developing the study the difficulties that John Lawrence encountered in his studies lead to a transformation in science and society. Understanding the dangers that X-Rays presented in treating cancer, John theorized that the use of neutron isotopes might present a safer method for tumor remission. While cancer treatment with X-Rays and the bombardment of neutrons could cause internal burning, John discovered that the use of neutrons proved effective in cancer reduction as the use of such radiation did involve the use nuclear materials’ whose half-lives lasted for longer than a few
