Iodine 131 Research Paper

Iodine-131 is an artificial radioisotope used in the medical industry and also is a product of nuclear fallout. In 1938 at the University of California, research scientists Glenn T. Seaborg and John Livingood discovered a life changing radioisotope which saves the lives of many hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer patients. After discovering and researching Iodine-131, Seaborg tested the radioisotope on his ill mother who had a thyroid condition. When seeing that the treatment had fixed his mother’s thyroid condition, more medical research was conducted into the uses of Iodine-131 and was then eventually first used to treat thyroid cancer in 1946. In modern day medicine, radioactive iodine treatment using Iodine-131 is delivered in either a liquid or capsule and is absorbed by the thyroid without causing harm to the rest of the patient’s body. Although mainly used to treat thyroid conditions, Iodine-131 is also used by medical professionals to discover abnormalities of the thyroid. …show more content…
As it is a radioisotope, Iodine-131 is an unstable element. As with every element, an unstable element has a certain number of protons and neutrons that make up the nucleus. If an element is stable, there will be a proportionate amount of neutrons to protons, however, when it comes to unstable elements there is a disproportionate amount of neutrons to protons. As Iodine-131 is radioactive, when it breaks down a new element is created, Xenon-131. This occurs because Iodine-131 is unstable which then causes the neutrons to change into either protons and electrons, therefore changing the

INT 420 Deona Sherrill Paper #1 There are literally thousands of web sites out there that claim to be news sources and many of these web sites are conspiracy sites and/or groups who think they can publish rumors as facts. This can wreak havoc on the internet and in some people’s lives and I think it is highly unethical to publish anything that has not first been proven to be true by finding the basis for their stories on facts and not rumors. I remember one story that flew the rumor mill last May about how the US Military was going to invade Texas or put Texas under Martial Law or at the very least was training our troops on how to put the entire United States under Martial Law. In reality, some of our special op troops were being brought…

The Chernobyl disaster (1986) was probably the worst possible accident in a nuclear power plant. It was the biggest catastrophe ever happened since the beginning of operating nuclear power stations. It started by a total meltdown of the reactor core. The explosion and the consequent reactor fire, burning for 10 days, resulted in a vast emission of radioactive material, early deaths of 31 persons and adverse consequences for the public and the environment [198]. This Chernobyl disaster provided many invaluable lessons.…

If the deficiency is prolonged it could lead to thyroid cancer.(2). Another application of Iodine is water purification. Iodine purifies water by oxidizing the bacteria in the water causing the iodide atoms to be reduced to negative iodine ions which disrupts the ion balance and the bacteria is killed.(3). Iodine is also used to test for the presence of starch: Lugol’s iodine solution (H2O + I2) is how this is tested. The presence of starch is indicated by a colour change causing the starch to turn black.(4).…

Contrary to the title, the discovery of astatine was anything but a momentary process. Many scientists discovered different astatine isotopes, atoms with the same number of protons but differing numbers of neutrons, but were unable to either reproduce their results or keep the isotope in existence for any useful amount of time. After decades of possible discovery and rediscovery, astatine was officially included in the periodic table of elements with the abbreviation At and an atomic number of 85. Considered a Halogen and sharing many traits of Halogens, especially Iodine, astatine lies in column seven and period six of the current periodic table. Like many of the elements, astatine’s initial inspiration for discovery was to fill-in a missing part of the periodic table.…

The thyroid is a small gland located in the neck just below the Adam’s apple. This gland produces hormones called Thyroxine and Triiodothyronine, otherwise known T4 and T3 respectively. These hormones and the thyroid are responsible for stimulating our body’s metabolism and extracting vitamins from foods we eat. The thyroid is considered the “thermostat” since it also maintains body temperature and its function affects every reaction in our body one way or another. As you can see the thyroid is extremely important and any imbalance can cause an extreme reaction, which is why thyroid autoimmune diseases are so devastating to our health.…
