Ephedrine is a primary ingredient within the herb Ephedra and is popular for its ability to induce fat loss though increased body heat and proneness to burn up fat for fuel, making a net increase of about five percent in metabolic rate for humans. One common suggestion is by making it that no more than 8 mg of ephedrine can be sold in a dosage, though companies argue that a decision like that could spiral out of control and affect other safer drugs, another issue being that most companies falsely advertise the amount of ephedrine in their products. Another proposed solution would be better education on the drug’s harmfulness and proper self regulation to companies with fines and lawsuits to those that do not, however many companies hire lawyers to find loopholes or simply ignore such cautions to their customers. The FDA has been following up with victims of ephedra abuse through the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice, which has garnered more success in removing ephedra and ephedrine alkaloids off the athletic market, though have been getting difficulties removing it as a straight diet supplement (FDA 2004).
