The definition of environmental science is the study of the environment and the quest for the solution to environmental problems such as pollution, global warming, and disappearing resources. The subfield of environmental science that is interesting is ecology. Ecology is the study of the interactions of organisms and some physical aspect of their environment. An example is the study of how two individual populations of two different organisms impact their environment through a symbiotic or competitive relationship. Sustainability to humans is the long-term maintenance of the environment, economic, and social concepts of the world. Environmental management is the approach of managing the environment and maintaining a healthy ecosystem that can provide vital resources. In the past, environmental management has been largely ignored due to technological advances and increase global populations. In the last fifty years an increased focus on global environmental issues has brought the concept of environmental management to the forefront of society. Increased environmental resource management is aimed at maintaining what resources are available to ensure survival of future generations by identifying factors that may arise between meeting the needs of the population and the protecting the valuable resources. Human values affect the concept of sustainability. Individualism is the human value of “what’s in it for me?” Individualism counteracts the concept of a sustainable society and environment. Individualism reduces the desire to make a contribution to sustainability efforts due to the lack of tangible rewards. Environmental hazards can have detrimental impacts on human health. Contaminated air and water supplies can lead to disease and destruction of resources. Pesticide tainted food can be detrimental to human health.
