A Rose for Emily: It’s no secret that Emily Grierson seemed crazy, she may have even suffered from a mental illness. Having such an illness could be drastic for one’s self or for others around them. Her actions were bizarre, from denying that her father had died to buying poison from the pharmacy and everything in between. Everyone in the town had noticed this, but never said anything to Miss Emily. Many people suffer from the effects of a mental illness, about 26.2 percent of Americans over the age of 18 have been diagnosed with a mental disorder. In this short Emily Grierson acts in a way that leads to believe that she may be suffering from some sort of mental illness. The first reason to believe that Miss Emily Grierson had a mental illness is that her father died but she refused to believe that he was gone. Some researchers believe that separation or loss of a parent or loved one can be the cause of most psychotic disorders. The day after he had died, women from town came to her aid and to offer condolence, but Emily told them that her father wasn’t dead. She did this for the next three days. On the third day, she finally broke down and let them bury her father. The town people didn’t think anything of Miss Emily’s actions, they felt that she was just grieving and that she would get over this soon.
