When one holds on to the past, the present is being destroyed. The past is a building block for the future, but should not be dwelt on. Paul Harris illustrates this point by stating, “the mystery is hidden in the “past,” as a scandalous event that remained hidden from view for a long time” (Harris 172). Miss Emily falls in love with homer in order to get away from her so called upper class. In the story, homer is a construction supervisor which is far from the upper class. Homer, like Emily was an outsider and was the subject of great scrutiny. This is what led Emily to keep her lover by her side forever, by murdering homer.
