The Juvenile Justice system has many programs that help rehabilitate, prevent recidivism by, and avoid detention time for, juvenile delinquents. They do this in a variety of ways, all of which entail some type of monitoring so that the system can keep these young offenders in line with acceptable behaviors. Intensive supervision, electronic monitoring and school probation are three of the most popular of these programs within the juvenile justice system. Each program is targeted towards different types of offenders, and each has it’s own goals for the juveniles assigned to that type of monitoring.

However, the impact of all three programs on the systems is clear. They offer alternatives to detention, which is not only beneficial to offenders, but helps ease our overburdened system as well. They also offer freedom and a sense of personal responsibility to juveniles, which empowers them to help themselves. It is the hope that that sense of personal responsibility and the freedom to choose one’s own behavior will help rehabilitate and prevent recidivism by juvenile delinquents. There are a number of key risk factors that high increase a juvenile’s risk for ending up involved with a gang. First of all, youths with a high number of negative social influences are more likely to be involved with a gang. This may include absentee parents, adults or friend who abuse drugs and alcohol or exhibit violent behavior, friends who are active in criminal activities, or people in their life who are already involved with gangs. These negative influences normalize negative behaviors, which is then emulated by the juvenile. Another key risk factor is a limited attachment to the community at large. As formal communities typically dictate acceptable social behaviors, juveniles who are not connected to that and are only connected to the fringes or subversive sides of a community are more likely to be involved in gangs and criminal
