Lennie is a very unique character because he is a gentle as a fly and is very kind and loving, but he is stronger than he knows and likes to pet soft things. His greatest problem, however, is that most of the “soft things” he touches he ends up killing them. This constantly gets him into trouble and he doesn’t know how to fix it or even what he is doing. He says, “Why do you got to get killed?” (Pg. 85) He says this after he kills a puppy that George promised him that he could have and this terrifies him. He was not vexed at the fact that he had killed his puppy, but the fact that he feared that he wouldn’t get to tend to the rabbits that George promised him. His handicap prevents him from talking with the other guys and associating with them because George told him not to speak so they could keep the job as ranch hands. In addition, his size and strength separates him from the rest of the guys so he is thought of as more of a workhorse than a human being.
